Aren't you supposed to put a question mark in front of questions only? Or do suggestions and maybe's and confused statements count, too? I see it happen all the time.

For example:
"I wonder what's in this box?" or:
Guy 1: "I can't seem to find my phone."
Guy 2: "Maybe it's on the couch?"
And even when people are just confused. Like "I see this happening all the time?".

So shouldn't those sentences be ended with a period instead of a question mark? Since they're statements and not questions? Or am I wrong on this one?

edit: So whenever somebody puts a question mark at the end of a sentence, it's a question, right? So when a guy says "I wonder why my penis is so hard" he's asking whether or not he wonders why his penis is hard, right?

That sounds like a suggestion. "Maybe it's on the couch or something." It's more of a "maybe" mixed with a suggestion, I guess.

There is the old Urban legend about the young student reading Philosophy at Oxford University. When it came to the end of year finals one particular paper merely asked, 'Is this a question'. The students laboured for hours, all writing varying amounts to answer such a bizarre question. The student however wrote only the following six words:

No, but this is an answer.
