A. There are those that have to study very hard to pull out an average or a good grade (average and good depend on the individual's interpretation of course).  But there are many people that study a great dela of time, and put an effort into their work, but don't always make it to the top.

B. But then there are those students that do the bare minimum, and can come out close to the top or at the top.  They don't study often, they don't always do their homework, and they seem to put in little time towards school.

--------------------------

Which do you think is more admirable?  Personally, I think those that can put in a great deal of effort are better than those who can do something half-assed and pull of acceptable traits.  I strongly think that if you try your best, that's really what's important.  Some subjects just don't stick with others, and that is frustrating, but when it comes down to it, many people would rather have the hard working that comes out with the average, than the one that does almost nothing and does a bit better... I think that having work ethic in and of itself is an amazing trait to possess :).

The first one. Effort is all that matters. As long as someone works hard for what they want, they shouldn't be respected.

So imagine what all the Bs could do if they put in effort! You need a bit of both to get to the top, and everyone would want to be a B, but yeah it's the As that get my kudos.

Meh, I dunno, being a B can suck sometimes.  I mean, they both have their frustrations... but I was never happy with any of my marks or achievements because I knew I never tried hard.  I mean, even my parents overlooked a 100% math grade for my 85% in English (always has, and always will be my worst subject).  The good would never matter, it was only the faults, because everyone knew I wouldn't try...

But part of me thought about it this way... maybe this is my way of trying.  I don't HAVE the work ethic to sit down and study for long periods of time, I don't have the patience to do more than the bare minimum... and that's something I'm trying to improve on, but it's not always the easiest thing to do -__-'.  But like you said, that's why I find A to be more admirable, it's such an amazing quality to have, and some people overlook it because they don't think the marks are good enough...

It's just the state of society today, where results are all that matters. I used to work hard and top the class, but over time I, like so many others, fell into the trap of procrastination and being lazy and just faded to average. And I see people working hard, and do getting the grades they deserve.

At the same time it's always painful for those who put in so much and come out disappointed. I guess there are a few who do notice and commend this effort though, and I do believe that those who never give up will eventually go far in life.

We're all given different talents for a reason. If everyone was just good academically, where would our diversity lie?

Very true... society puts so much pressure on the outward performance rather than the effort goes into it.  However, my dad would ALWAYS remind me that studying and getting an F would be more valuable to him than not studying and getting an A.  For that reason, he was never happy with my marks, lol.  And neither was I, I guess..

But it does cause trouble.  A good friend of mine was one that studied so hard, but couldn't pull out good marks.  Sometimes average or below average.  Part of it may have been how she studied (pure memorization and not actually understanding it), but part of it is just where her abilities lie.  She has an amazing knack for creativity and things that contain crafts and fashion and the like.  Some people overlook that... I was talking to a friend of mine, and I mentioned that friend's worth ethic, and he said "I never knew, I thought she never studied", and that's because he knew the kind of marks she got...

I don't know, I think she has some amazing qualities to her... like you said, it's the diversity that makes some people suitable for certain things.  Many of her qualities I would love to have, as she would probably feel the same about me or others... I suppose you just have to accept yourself and realize that just because you aren't good in the more 'accepted' way, doesn't mean that you don't have you own amazing talents to support you :).

Agreed. We can't please everyone, but there ought to be at least a handful who will be bound to notice your talent.

Now only if we can get the rest of the world to realise that, rather than heaping on the judgements and criticism...
